RESPONSES
After the Haiti earthquake in 2010, there were many responses both short term and long term.
Short:
Numerous organisations and nations pledged money to help in the earthquake. The Dominican Republic provided emergency water, medical supplies and heavy machinery. Temporary hospitals were set up by organisations and medical volunteers worked at them to help the injured. Aid organisations assisted with Geography Information Systems to provide the country with satellite images and maps of the area. Many pledged money over their mobile phones as the world watched the news. Ordinary American citizens gave more than $11 million via a text message donation service. The United Nations troupes and police helped distribute support in the area. The United States gave $100 million in aid and the European Union gave $330 million. 810 000 people were placed in aid camps with 115 000 tents and more than 1 million tarpaulin shelters provided. Celebrities even donated money and this included Angelina Jolie who donated $1 million dollars. A celebrity telethon was also hosted to raise funds for the country’s rebuilding process.
Long:
Organisations and governments continued to pledge money to help the rebuilding of the country. Programs also started paying citizens to clean the area in return for money. Small farmers were being supported to maintain their crops so food could be provided to the citizens. Schools and hospitals were being rebuilt. Aid access was restricted because an estimated 98% of the rubble hadn’t been cleared in the months following the earthquake.
