The 2010 earthquake in Haiti affected Haiti’s rich cultural
heritage as it damaged historic buildings museums, libraries, archives,
galleries, churches, theatres and marketplaces. 32 churches had to be repaired.
Many important landmarks were lost. This included the Presidential Palace, the
National Assembly and the Port-au-Prince Cathedral, a 1914 structure that took
30 years to build. The Haiti Cultural Recovery Project was set up to rescue,
recover, safeguard and help restore Haiti’s culture after the earthquake. They
worked to reinstate artwork, artefacts, documents, media and architectural
features.
